The hardest part of leadership isn't the strategy. It's the pause before you speak.

Every instinct says fix it. Move fast, solve the problem, give the answer. The work that actually builds strong teams happens in the moment before that, listening long enough to understand what's really going on, then asking the question that helps someone find their own way forward.

After nearly twenty years leading marketing across agency and in-house organizations, I've learned that the biggest challenges are rarely tactical. They're usually about alignment, trust, and helping people move toward the same goal. That's shaped the way I approach leadership just as much as the way I approach marketing.

On brand, I've had the same conversation more times than I can count. Someone says "brand," and the room starts talking about logos, colors, and fonts. Those things matter. They're not the brand. A brand is the feeling someone associates with your company before they've even decided to buy. It's shaped by every interaction, every message, and every experience. It's what the CEO and the newest employee communicate, whether they realize it or not. It's what makes someone feel like they know you before they've met you.

Marketing gets oversimplified in much the same way. On the surface, it looks straightforward. Show people your product. Tell them why it matters. The real work happens underneath that, understanding your audience, building trust over time, and guiding someone from awareness to consideration to action. Every campaign, every conversation, and every decision contributes to that journey. Getting it right takes experience, instinct, and a willingness to stay curious.

I genuinely care about the work and the people I do it with. That's not a value statement. It's just how I'm wired. You spend too much of your life at work not to be invested in both. The best teams I've been part of shared that mindset, and it showed in the work we produced, the relationships we built, and the results we achieved together.
